Open data mashup challenge

Do you have a brilliant idea for an app that uses open data sets to support university students through their learning journey?

You could be selected to participate in an open data mashup day in central London with the chance to win development support worth £5,000. UK based developers, students and university staff can apply. The challenge closes 30 October and the open data mashup day is on 17 November.

About the student journey

We are looking for ideas for an app that uses open data sets to help university students navigate key points in their ‘student journey’ - from first thoughts about choosing a course through to leaving and looking for a job. During their journey, students have a range of questions they seek answers to. Here are just few examples:

  • How do I choose a course and find out what funding support is available?
  • How do I find accommodation that is right for me?
  • How do I locate library resources, lab equipment or computers?
  • How can I search for work placements, jobs or volunteering?

Getting started with open data

Your idea should explain how your app would use open data to provide a service to students. For starters, you could look at this key source of higher education data and check out what the University of Southampton is doing. Ideas can specify open data sources that are available, but we are also interested in ideas that would inspire universities and other organisations to make their data open. If you are selected as a finalist to participate in the open data mashup day, you will also be given access to data sets provided by our university partners and you will be supported by data experts who will help you to make the best possible demo.

What should I do now?

The challenge is open to all university students and staff, as well as developers, startups and social enterprises from outside higher education. You must be based in the UK.

You can enter the challenge on this website by uploading a short video and description. All ideas are available to be voted on and up to six entries will be selected as finalists to participate in the “Open Data Mashup Day: Enhancing the Student Journey” on 17 November at Woburn House in central London. The day will bring universities and developers together in an immersive day to explore the value of working with open data.
