About Open data mashup challenge

Do you have a brilliant idea for an app that uses open data sets to support university students through their learning journey?

Your idea could be selected for development at an open data mashup day and win development support worth £5,000. UK based developers, students and university staff can apply. The challenge closes 30 October and the mashup day is on 17 November.

About the student journey

We are looking for ideas for an app that uses open data sets to help university students navigate key points in their ‘student journey’ - from first thoughts about choosing a course through to leaving and looking for a job. Here are few examples of questions they might seek answers to:

  • How do I choose a course and find out what funding support is available?
  • How do I find accommodation that is right for me?
  • How do I locate library resources, lab equipment or computers?
  • How can I search for work placements, jobs or volunteering?

Getting started with open data

Your idea should explain how your app would use open data to provide a service to students. Ideas can specify open data sources that are available, but we are also interested in ideas that would inspire universities and other organisations to make their data open. If you are selected as a finalist to participate in the open data mashup day, you will also be given access to data sets provided by our university partners and you will be supported by data experts who will help you to make the best possible demo.

Who can apply?

The challenge is open to all university students and staff, as well as developers, startups and social enterprises from outside higher education. You must be based in the UK.

How does the challenge work?

Step 1: You should explore the guidance provided above and read the entry and judging criteria, and terms and conditions.

Step 2: Upload a 3-min video and short description of your idea on the Elevator site. The challenge closes at 12 noon on 30 October 2015. The challenge team will validate the ideas and contact you if more information is required.

Step 3: Your idea will be open to voting by university students and staff from 12 noon on 28 September to 12 noon on 6 November. Remember - the earlier you upload, the more time you will have to promote your idea and attract votes.

Step 4: Up to six entrants will be selected to participate on the open data mash up day.

Step 5: On the open data mashup day on 17 November 2015 the finalists will produce demonstrator visualisations of an app and make pitches to a judging panel.

Step 6: A winning idea will be eligible to receive development support worth £5,000 provided by digital technologies charity Jisc.

About the open data mashup day

The challenge will culminate in an “Open Data Mashup Day: Enhancing the Student Journey” on 17 November at Woburn House in central London. The day will bring universities and developers together in an immersive day to explore the value of working with open data. The developers will take part in challenge sprints and pitch their ideas to a judging panel. University staff will get a taste of how innovative data-driven products are born. Technical support and clinics on key open data topics will be provided. A closing session comprising an award ceremony, keynote speeches and drinks reception will provide inspiration to delegates and specially invited guests.

About the challenge organisers

The challenge and the open data mashup day are being organised by Universities UK in partnership with the Open Data Institute and the digital technologies charity Jisc.
